Night Rating

A Night Rating is typically one of the first ratings a private pilot will complete upon licensing.

A Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane endorsed with a Night Rating allows you to:

  • Operate aeroplanes, at night, which are endorsed on their licence.

Requirements:

  • Valid Private Pilot Licence
  • Valid Category 1 or 3 Medical Certificate

Training Requirements:

To achieve your Night Rating you must have:

  • a minimum of 20 hours pilot flight time in aeroplanes, including:
    1. 10 hours of night flight time including a minimum of:
      1. 5 hours dual flight time, including two hours of cross country flight time
      2. 5 hours solo flight time, including 10 takeoffs, circuits and landings
      3. 10 hours dual instrument time
      4. Credit for a maximum of five hours of the 10 hours of dual instrument may be given for instrument ground time, provided that the total instrument time shall be in addition to the 10 hours night flight time in sub-paragraph above.
  • and have displayed satisfactory knowledge to your instructor.

Note: Within the 12 months preceding the date of application for a night rating, an applicant shall have successfully completed a qualifying flight under the supervision of a Transport Canada Inspector or a person qualified in accordance with CAR 425.21 (4) (your flight instructor) by demonstrating the level of skill specified in the Flight Instructor Guide – Aeroplane (TP 975).
